December Pattern/Tutorial: Make Your Own Top Whorl Drop Spindle

This is what happens when you are an extreme DIYer like me...
It was way back in June of 2011 that I discovered spinning.  I'd heard of it before in passing before but the term drop spindle was new to me.

Being the over exuberant crafty type that I am, I couldn't wait to buy one.  I couldn't decide which type I wanted, or who was a good supplier, and it just made more tense to try out on something I could put together than spend a lot of money on something I might end up hating...as if I could hate a craft...! HA!

The things I do to create...
Truly I won't trouble you with the actual tutorial I used.  Truth be told, I seemed to have misplaced it and really I didn't follow it very carefully as I was a little desperate, it was late and I wanted a spindled now!  Suffice it to say I used the stick from a broken Halloween decoration (it was a witch's broom I'd been meaning to fix for ages), 2 cds that wouldn't burn because of scratches, a bent nail, and copious amounts of white electrical tape.

It's not balanced correctly, so the spin is a bit off, but I did get it to spin some fiber.  So it wasn't a total waste of time.

Nothing like a bit of recycling right...?
But I didn't want to lead you along all this way without actually giving you something useful other than an anecdote about my fiber addiction.  I recently searched and I found this tutorial on Instructables for making a top whorl drop spindle.  I looked it over and with my better understanding of spindles and how they work it is a sound one.

And just in case you're not the crafty type or you would rather just buy one,  you can check out the seller I go to on Etsy - The Dancing Goats.  Robin makes the most beautiful spindles, each with care and love and from upcycled bits of wood!

So I'd love to hear from you!  Are you a spinner?  Do you use a top or bottom whorl spindle?  Did you make your own?  Do you have another tutorial you liked?  If you're new to the blog, make sure you join my newsletter and connect with me on social media too!
