I graduated from SCAD with a degree in Illustration and Jeb is currently a student at UTK for creative writing. We're currently engaged and planning our wedding for next year! I work full time on Hull Street and my freelance work. We have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Miley, a big orange cat named Loki and an awesome hedgehog named Harold.
We've been working with recycled materials as Hull Street for two and a half years. But we're both extremely creative people, we both also work freelance! I'm a watercolor illustrator and Jeb is a writer.
2. What inspires you the most?
I love to keep an eye on the art world and be inspired by beautiful pieces. It can be anything from certain colors or shapes that make me think of something.
3. What is/are your favorite materials/supplies?
I love to work with watercolors (seriously, it's ridiculous how excited I get buying new paint!) and beautiful vintage paper. I love finding a new (to us) old book and feeling those wonderful yellowed pages!
4. Do you have a favorite tool?
A nice, sharp pair of scissors.
5. What is your work space like?
Our office is in the second bedroom of our apartment (actually, this is the master bedroom! We moved our bed to the smaller bedroom!), we have three desks (one for Erica, one for Jeb and one for Harold our hedgehog) and depending on what part of the month it's a complete disaster or completely organized. I tend to be really messy (who can be bothered to put things away when you're working?) but it'll get on my nerves after so long and I'll spend an entire day going through everything in the office and putting it all back where it should go!
6. When do you find the most time to work?
I usually get the most done in the afternoon and evening since the morning is spent answering emails and seeing what's happening in the community (and checking out Pinterest, let's be honest).
7. How does your work fit into the rest of your life?
Pretty well, we can choose when or how long to work. It definitely makes it easy to travel and visit family whenever we'd like (and take work with us of course!) which we do pretty often. We also get to stay home with our pets all day long.
8. How often a week do you get to work?
I work every day; I'm a workaholic and just can't help myself! Jeb definitely does his best to make sure I take time off (half days on Sunday count right?).
9. Do you sell your work? Directly? Indirectly?
We do both. We love the ability to work with our customers, especially around the holidays to make that perfect custom item with their family photos or whatever they love most for gift-giving. We have an Etsy shop and participate in a couple craft show events a year. Wholesale is also a lot of fun for us, there's the opportunity to introduce our items to a much larger audience!
10. Do you have a business? Consign?
Online, we have Hull Street and my watercolor Etsy shop is coming soon. We haven't found the right circumstances for consignment yet.
11. Do you have a website? Blog? Facebook profile or fan page? Myspace? Twitter? Pinterest?
We have our own website, Facebook fan page, Twitter and of course I have Pinterest! I love Pinterest! I also run a Tumblr blog where I feature eight Etsy pieces a day from sellers all over the world.
12. Where do you feel your work fits in your market?
The majority or our accessories are one of a kind but our home decor items we can make many of. I'd love to see our items in an upscale decor shop and our accessories in gift shops. They're such easy gifts to give (especially at Christmas) that they could do well almost anywhere! We have a bunch of new items coming into the shop soon that are great for weddings and hospital gift shops.
13. What is your favorite part?
Creating new items! I'm constantly getting new ideas, whether they're varieties of things we already make or completely different. Plus my mom loves to come up with new ideas (but not make them) that she tells me about.
14. How did you get into crafting?
I was lucky to belong to a very supportive and creative family. Neither of my parents is an artist but they love and support the arts and both their children are artists! So from a young age I took art classes and learned new materials and techniques. My mom is especially creative; she's just not patient enough to make any of her ideas. Ha!
15. Favorite deceased artist? Why?
Definitely J.C. Leyendecker, he's from the early 20th century and did these WONDERFUL ad posters and other editorial pieces, mostly for the Saturday Evening Post.
16. Favorite live artist? Why?
Dolan Geiman, I really absolutely love his use of recycled materials and creativity with them.
