Not hardly...in fact I'm proposing something a bit more radical and yet o so simple...
I'm not necessarily a fan of being different either, because at this point it's become a fad. In many cases its so difficult to be different you can't help but come off as trying too hard. A bit distasteful to me personally.
So to hell with all of that and do this one simple thing...but first a little more about my perspective on this.
I prefer to maintain an air of professionalism in my work. I wouldn't say I blend entirely with the business landscapes. After all I have no trouble using profanity or irreverent language. But I don't revel in rebellion either. I think there's a time and place and sometimes a little shock value is needed to get people's attention.
I wouldn't want to do business with someone who didn't take their work or my time seriously either. So really it's a practical purpose it serves. And despite being a little laissez faire in my general attitude to life (not business mind you as it's also an economic term) I believe in the purpose and usefulness of rules in general.
But throwing caution entirely to the wind and being willy nilly about everything certainly doesn't suit me. If something works I don't feel the need to rush out and fix it (it's not broken). Is it not worth looking forward and improving? Of course it is, but should you do so just to be different? That brings a resounding "meh" from me.
So what should you do? Two simple words...be you. If you're sedate sometimes, go for it. If you like to be around others like you, again have at it! I think we place entirely too much precedence on what others think and not nearly enough on what is important and what matters to us. We are trained monkeys or mindless sheep when it comes to our interactions with society because we fear being pegged as "not right" or "different" as if such monikers are a travesty against our species.
So here's my challenge to you...be a little more you every day. See how it feels to try that on for size.
In the comments below share with me:
- What have you done most in the past: blended? been different?
- How do you plan to be a little more you everyday?
